The number of students experiencing homelessness in California has reached a new peak, according to a report published Wednesday by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools.
Researchers found that the number of students experiencing homelessness reached a record 298,254 during the 2024-25 school year, a 10% increase from the previous peak in 2018-19.
The study authors noted that the 2024-25 figure is equivalent to more than five times the capacity of Dodger Stadium, which can seat about 56,000 people.
Among districts with at least 500 students, five of the 10 districts with the highest rates of student homelessness were on the Central Coast, specifically in Monterey and Santa Barbara counties. Four of the 10 were located in Monterey County, according to the report.
