Dr. McGarry’s research line has focused primarily on the barriers and supports for women and minoritized individuals in sport leading her to found Husky Sport, a sport-based youth development program, in 2003. In 2021, she managed the integration of Husky Sport and Husky Nutrition, a UConn Health-based community nutrition program. For FY26, UConn Husky Nutrition & Sport (UConn HNS) was allocated $1.6M in funding from the USDA. Husky Nutrition had received USDA funding since 1994, and Husky Sport since 2005. Dr. McGarry currently serves as executive director for Husky Nutrition and Sport‘s programming and research. Husky Nutrition and Sport works with schools and community organizations across the state of Connecticut to provide direct education emphasizes exposure and access to sport and physical activity and promotes healthy nutrition and lifestyles. Research has focused specifically on deconstructing traditional research approaches involving community partners, the impact of sport and physical activity programs on pre-adolescent females and the impact of involvement in critical service learning on college student.
