Ian Thompson is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Oxford. He is the lead editor of the journal Teaching Education. Before joining Oxford, Ian taught English for sixteen years in state secondary schools. He is currently the primary investigator on the project Picture This: The Robson Orr Visual Literacy Research Initiative and was a co-primary investigator on the UK Research and Innovation funded project Excluded Lives: The Political Economies of School Exclusion and their Consequences (2019-24). His previous research projects include Lessons from Violence Reduction Units for School Exclusions after COVID-19, Cultural Artefacts and Belonging, Collaboration for Teaching and Learning. and Disparities in School Exclusion across the UK. His primary research interests are in understanding all aspects of school exclusion and inclusion and the unintended outcomes of policy and practice for marginalised young people.
