About the Project

How can states better understand and respond to the growing crisis of student homelessness—and what does the latest data reveal about who these young people are and what they need to thrive?

CTS has been selected by American Institutes for Research as a research partner for the West Comprehensive Center, one of four Regional Comprehensive Centers that will support national, state, and local efforts to address educational challenges and help students thrive.

CTS will develop a set of policy fact sheets—one each for California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada—to shine a light on the experiences and needs of housing insecure students in these states. Using the latest state and federal data, along with CTS’s nationally recognized research, each fact sheet will include:

  • The distribution of young people experiencing homelessness across each state, with demographic and geographic trends across districts and counties.
  • Differences in academic, social and educational outcomes for housing-insecure youth compared to their peers.
  • Recommendations to inform state specific policies and practices.

Designed for state and local education agencies, educators, policymakers, and community leaders, this fact sheet series will provide an accessible, research-based look at the urgency of the student homelessness crisis.
