Sarah Pérez is a first-year doctoral student in the Urban Schooling Division at UCLA’s School of Education and Information Studies. Her background as a child of immigrants and a youth-centered mentor in schools in Los Angeles informs her research interests in examining the ways current language policies and practices affect how recent immigrant high school youth (“newcomers”) navigate their futures, particularly as it concerns access to college pathways. She hopes to continue to serve young people and their families by engaging in policy advocacy and creating programs where youths have opportunities to engage in community joy and advocacy.
